(26.11.2015) And the Winner is: Frau Professor Martine Extermann!
Die weltweit anerkannte Expertin in geriatrischer Onkologie wurde für ihr Lebenswerk im Rahmen der Jahrestagung der Deutschen, Österreichischen und Schweizerischen Gesellschaften für Hämatologie und Medizinischen Onkologie ausgezeichnet. Der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Ehrenpreis Geriatrische Onkologie ehrt Persönlichkeiten, die sich um die Förderung und Verbreitung des Themas Geriatrische Onkologie besonders verdient gemacht haben und einen bedeutenden Teil ihrer medizinischen Lebensarbeit darauf verwendet haben.

Frau Professor Dr. Martine Extermann lehrt seit 1997 als außerordentliche Professorin an der University of South Florida und arbeitet als Oberärztin im Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa, Florida. Hier erforscht sie vor allem die ineinandergreifenden Themen Komorbiditäten, geriatrisches Assessment und Prädiktion, beziehungsweise Prävention von chemotherapeutischer Toxizität bei älteren Krebspatienten.

Das siebenköpfige Preiskomitee begründete seine Entscheidung in der Laudatio für die ausgezeichnete Frau Prof. Dr. Martine Extermann wie folgt:
„(…) Prof. Dr. Extermann is one of the best known and most engaged clinical orientated scientists and physicians in the field of Geriatric Oncology. Starting her oncologic career in Geneva in the early nineteenth of the last century, later on in the Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute at Tampa University, Florida, her research focused on comorbidity and tolerance to treatment by older cancer patients. She is one of the leading researchers in the field of Geriatric Oncology. She worked on assessing the benefits from treatments in patients with comorbidities and modelizing them and adept the treatment on this special situation. She designed a treatment tolerance score and she is working on including body composition and therapy-personalizing assessment of chemotherapy to improve these models. She had published 91 peer reviewed publications, 4 books, 27 book chapters and others mostly in highest rated international journals and periodicals. She held and holds memberships and presidential chairs in several Scientific Societies and boards and was honored by scientific awards e. g. the ASCO Kennedy Award for scientific excellence in Geriatric Oncology and the Paul Calabresy Award of the SIOG.
Besides her colleague Ludovico Balducci, which can be called as a Nestor of Geriatric Oncology, she is without doubt a person who has influenced and promoted Geriatric Oncology worldwide and with great enthusiasm.
Therefore, for the price committee it was a very unique and a very clear decision to dedicate the first price for lifework in Geriatric Oncology to Prof. Martine Extermann.“
