EuGMS SIG on Frailty & Resilience in Geriatric Medicine

The EuGMS SIG on Frailty and Resilience in Geriatric Medicine is glad to invite you to its first OPEN meeting. The meeting will take place on 20th March 2025, 5 PM to 6 PM CEST
The agenda of the upcoming meeting is as follows:
SPEAKER 1 & 2: new co-leaders => Dhayana Dallmeier (DD) & Ellen Freiberger (EF) (20 minutes, 10 minutes discussion):
TITLE 1: "Introduction to the new co-leaders"
BIO Dhayana Dallmeier
As an internist and epidemiologist trained at the European Academy of Medicine of Ageing, Dhayana Dallmeier has worked in the field of Geriatrics since completing her PhD in Epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health. As an Associate Professor at the University of Ulm, she heads the Research Unit on Aging at the Academic Teaching Hospital for Geriatrics, the Agaplesion Bethesda Clinic Ulm. Her research focuses on understanding the heterogeneity of older adults defined by frailty. Trained in Preventive Medicine and General Internal Medicine, she is particularly interested in the comprehensive assessment of frailty to identify pathways for prevention, as well as its role as an effect modifier for medical treatments in various conditions in older adults, such as hypertension.
BIO Ellen Freiberger
Having a background of Sport Science and Gerontology EF was working since 2013 as an associate professor at the Institute of Biomedicine for Ageing (Chair: Cornel Sieber) at the FAU and being responsible for European projects and research in the area of physical activity and aging. Teaching in the MA gerontology program at the Institute of Gerontology (IPG/FAU). Retired in November 2021.
Main research interests of EF are in complex geriatric exercise intervention for fall prevention, mobility and physical function in sarcopenic and frail older persons, as well as geriatric assessment. EF was/still is part in Global Initiative on Fall Prevention co-leading WP 1 (Assessment) and Leading WP_12 Concerns about Falls and Falling.
This meeting will propose some key themes and plans we hope to develop as part of our collaboration over the forthcoming 2 years.
SPEAKER 2: Matteo Cesari (15 minutes, 15 minutes discussion)
TITLE 2: The current state of frailty.
Matteo Cesari was one of the former Co-leader of the SIG frailty group. He is Professor of Geriatrics at the Università di Milano (Milan, Italy) and currently working at the Aging and Health Unit of the World Health Organization in Geneva (Switzerland). His activities are focused on the prevention and management of age-related conditions, in particular frailty, promoting a comprehensive approach to older people and the delivery of person-centred care.
He will address in his talk current challenges in the management of the complex geriatric syndrome of frailty. He will discuss about the issues in public health around this concept and the approach promoted by the WHO to shift from disease-oriented to more holistic care for older persons.
